Istanbul has introduced updated luggage regulations for the metro and other public transport systems. The new rules, published on the official Metro Istanbul website, aim to improve passenger safety and ensure more organized travel during peak hours.
What you can carry for free
One suitcase: Up to 30 kg and a maximum size of 120×60×50 cm.
One piece of hand luggage or a small/medium backpack.
Items exceeding these limits are not allowed.
If you have a second suitcase
A second suitcase can only be transported outside peak hours (07:00–09:00 and 17:00–20:00) with an additional ticket costing 37 TRY.
Important notes
Tourist and mountaineering backpacks are considered suitcases.
Suitcases may not be placed on seats or obstruct pathways.
All luggage must be carried by one person.
This update contributes to a more predictable and comfortable transportation experience—important for both residents and those planning to invest in or move to Turkey.
