New regulations regarding vehicles with Ukrainian registration have come into effect in Turkey. These changes are particularly relevant for foreign property owners and long-term residents who rely on their private vehicles for daily living or periodic stays.
NEW REGULATIONS FROM THE TURKISH CUSTOMS AUTHORITY
The Turkish Customs Authority has issued a circular stating that Ukrainian-plated vehicles present in Turkey since February 24, 2022, and previously extended every six months, will no longer be eligible for extension.
KEY DEADLINES
All such vehicles must leave Turkey by 31 December 2025, or by the date indicated in the owner’s passport at the last extension.
After this date, the vehicle’s presence in the country will be considered illegal. Fines may be imposed (up to three months), and during road inspections the vehicle may be detained and taken to an impound lot.
Exception: These rules do not apply to retirees — they may still keep their vehicles in Turkey for up to four years.
IMPORTANT FOR FOREIGN PROPERTY OWNERS
1. Check the entry stamp in your passport.
2. If planning to re-enter with the vehicle: You must leave Turkey with the car for 185 days before bringing it back.
3. Option to obtain Turkish plates: Turkish registration and license plates can be issued through Türkiye Turing ve Otomobil Kurumu.
Eligible applicants:
• Ukrainian retirees
• students of Turkish universities
• holders of work permits
• diplomats
A deposit of 40% of the vehicle’s Turkish market value is required. In some cases, the amount may exceed $10,000. The deposit is refunded once the car permanently leaves Turkey.
Vehicle owners must also:
• pay annual motor vehicle tax,
• pass technical inspection every two years.
CONCLUSION
If your Ukrainian-registered vehicle has been in Turkey for more than two years, it is recommended to check the allowed period now and decide whether to remove the car from the country by the end of 2025 or obtain local registration. For property owners and long-term residents, transport compliance becomes especially important under the new rules.
